Natural Gas Rebate
What is the rebate for?
Alongside the delivery of the electricity rebate, the Government of Alberta has announced a natural gas rebate to help Albertans manage winter heating costs. From October 2022 to March 2023, eligible consumers will receive a rebate covering the difference if the regulated rate in the calendar month goes above $6.50 per gigajoule. For example, if the regulated rate is $7.50/GJ, eligible consumers would receive a $1.00 rebate for every gigajoule of gas consumed in that month.
When will I see the rebate on my bill?
If triggered, the rebate will be in effect each month it is triggered from October 2022 until the end of March 2023.
Who is eligible for this rebate?
Eligible consumers include all residential, farm, and small business consumers who consumed less than 2,500 gigajoules of gas over the last twelve months.
Who is providing this rebate?
The rebate is provided and funded by the Government of Alberta as part of the Natural Gas Rebate Program to help Albertans cover the high cost of natural gas. Retailers are responsible for delivering the rebate and Distribution companies (the companies that deliver natural gas to consumers) have determined eligibility. If you are eligible and the rebate is triggered, we will provide the rebate and we will automatically include it on your bill.
Where can I find the rebate on my bill?
Starting on your bill for October consumption, the rebate can be found at the bottom of the “Retailer Charges” section of your bill.
What happens if I am no longer a Direct Energy Regulated Services customer?
If you are eligible, the rebate will automatically be applied to your bill during the time of the rebate period, regardless of who your retailer is. Therefore, if you switch retailers and receive natural gas bills from October 2022 to March 2023, you will still receive the rebate if it is triggered and if you are eligible.
Why haven’t I received the rebate?
Only eligible consumers (those who are connected and consumed less than 2,500 gigajoules of gas over the last twelve months) are entitled to this rebate. If you meet eligibility requirements, you will start receiving rebates, if triggered, on your bill for October consumption.
If the natural gas rebate has been triggered during the rebate period and you don’t see the rebate on your bill, check your billing period. A bill received in October for example may only have consumption up until September, which lies outside of the rebate period.
If you think you should qualify for the rebate during a month in which it is triggered but have not received the rebate on your bill, please contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate at 310-4822 or https://ucahelps.alberta.ca for support.
Why haven’t I received the rebate for all my consumption?
The natural gas rebate will be triggered on a monthly basis and may not apply to every gigajoule consumed over your billing period. If your billing period runs from September 15 to October 15 and the rebate was triggered in October, you will only receive a rebate on natural gas consumed from October 1 to October 15 on that bill. The remainder of your October rebate would then appear on your next bill. Rebate amounts may differ each month and may not be triggered in any given month during the rebate period.

Effective January 1, 2023, the Government of Alberta is extending the electricity rebate program until April 30, 2023. The electricity rebate provided consumers with $50 rebates on their energy bills from July through December 2022. This extension will provide eligible consumers with $200 in additional rebates on their electricity bills by applying credits of $75 in both January and February, as well as credits of $25 in March and April of 2023. The rebates will continue to be automatically credited to eligible consumers’ electricity bills.
Who is eligible for this rebate?
Eligible consumers for this rebate are those who were enrolled and consumed electricity after December 31, 2022 (in January, February, March and April 2023), and whose electricity use is under 250,000 kilowatt hours per year. This includes most residential, farm and small commercial sites. This will provide help to more than 1.9 million families, farms and businesses who have experienced high electricity charges. If you received the rebates in July to December 2022, you will continue to receive rebates in January to April 2023.
Where can I find the electricity rebate on my bill?
Look for a separate line item titled “GOA Utility Commodity Rebate” showing the $75 credit in January and February and a $25 credit in March and April 2023 in the distribution section.
Who is providing this rebate?
The rebate is provided and funded by the Government of Alberta. On April 29, 2022, the Government of Alberta passed the Utility Commodity Rebate Regulation under the Utility Commodity Rebate Act to help cover the high electricity costs Albertans experienced recently. Distribution companies (the companies that own the wires that deliver electricity to consumers) are responsible for delivering the rebate program and determining eligibility. If you are eligible, your distribution company will provide us the rebate and we will automatically include it on your bill.
Why haven't I received the electricity rebate?
Only eligible consumers (those who were enrolled and consumed electricity after December 31, 2022) are entitled to this rebate. If you think you should qualify for the rebate, please contact the Utilities Consumer Advocate at 310-4822 or https://ucahelps.alberta.ca for support.
What happens if I am no longer a Direct Energy Regulated Services customer?
All eligible consumers (those who were enrolled and consumed electricity after December 31, 2022 and consume less than 250,000 kilowatt hours per year) are entitled to this rebate regardless of your retailer. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you will start receiving rebates on your January 2023 bill. How will this affect my Budget Billing calculation?
The rebates will reduce your overall bill amount which is what your BPP amount uses to calculate future adjustments. Since Budget Billing amounts are adjusted on an annual basis, the impact on your Budget Billing calculation will be reflected in your next BPP adjustment which should take place in May 2023.
Can I get this rebate in a cheque?
No, under the regulation the credit can only be applied to and must be shown on your utility bill.
How long will I get this rebate for?
Eligible consumers will receive credits over four months: $75 in January and February, and $25 in March and April 2023.
